Outscoring the Peacocks in the final three quarters, Monmouth snapped its seven-game losing skid and defeated Saint Peter's for its first MAAC win of the season on Sunday, 51-44. Senior
Rhaiah Spooner-Knight narrowly missed a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Sophomore
Alaina Jarnot added 11 points, while sophomore
Alexa Middleton grabbed nine rebounds. Monmouth head coach
Jody Craig earned her first win since assuming head coaching duties on December 8. The Hawks improved to 3-11 (1-2 MAAC) on the season, and and will face Iona twice in nine days, beginning with Saturday's matchup.
SCOUTING THE IONA GAELS
Iona dropped to 0-15 (0-4 MAAC) with a 74-38 loss against Quinnipiac on January 6. The Gaels also have conference losses to Niagara, Canisius, and Siena. The team is led by Preseason All-MAAC First Team forward Alexis Lewis, who is averaging 13.3 points per game and 8.0 rebounds per game. Freshman Toyosi Abiola recently won her third straight MAAC Rookie of the Week honor, and sixth of the season. Abiola is second on the team with 13.2 points per contest.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. IONA
Iona enjoys the slight 9-6 all-time series lead over Monmouth, and the teams split last season with each team winning at home. In New Rochelle, the Gaels earned the 60-54 win despite 12 points and seven rebounds from
Taylor Nason. In Monmouth's 75-65 win at home,
Alaina Jarnot dropped a career-high 19 points to go along with five assists. McKinzee Barker matched her career-high with 16 points as well.
