FINAL SCORE
Monmouth 2 (3-2-1)
Drexel 1 (3-4-0)
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Rachelle Ross' goal with five seconds remaining capped a 2-1 come-from-behind victory for the Monmouth University women's soccer team over Drexel on Friday night at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn.
Drexel scored first in the 60
th minute when Shaelyn McCarty sent a right-footed rocket into the top corner past Monmouth keeper Amanda Knuab. McCarty hit the bouncing ball in the box, after the Hawks' defense blocked an initial shot moments earlier, to put the visitors in front.
Monmouth responded a little more than eight minutes later when
Jessica Johnson sent a perfect through ball to
Lexie Palladino, who one-timed a shot at the end of her run just inside the Drexel penalty area. Palladino's tally tied the score at a goal apiece in the 68
th minute.
Drexel nearly regained the lead four minutes later when Madison Dunn's volley off a corner kick struck the crossbar, before her rebound attempt sailed high.
The game seemed destined for extra time before
Sophie Centi took control of the ball in the midfield and sent a pass to the far side for
Madie Gibson. Gibson was in on a 2-on-1 with Ross, drew the Drexel defense in, and sent a right-footed pass across to Ross for the game-winner.
