MONMOUTH HALL OF FAME COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES CLASS OF 2008

WEST LONG BRANCH (August 12, 2008) The Monmouth University Sports Hall of Fame has announced the inductees chosen for the class of 2008. This distinguished class includes Dr. Greg Bordiuk '79 (Cross Country and Track & Field), John Haas '70 (Basketball), William Kiss '77 (Swimming), Joan Martin (Coach, Administration), Barbara Paterno Clark '80 (Basketball, Volleyball and Softball), and William Terry, '77 (Basketball).

This year's class will be inducted into the Monmouth University Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, October 3rd at a dinner in historic Wilson Hall, and be honored in a half time ceremony during the Hawks' football game on Saturday, October 4th when Monmouth hosts Saint Francis University at 1 p.m.

Dr. Bordiuk'79 attended Monmouth University from 1975 to 1979, where he competed in cross country and track and field all four years. While at Monmouth, Bordiuk was a national qualifier in the NCAA Division III 400 hurdles in 1977 and 1978, while he held the school-record for the triple jump and 400 hurdles.  An ICAAAA semifinalist in the 400 hurdles in 1978, Bordiuk claimed the NAIA District 31 Championship in 1976 and 1977, and was tabbed the Monmouth Track Athlete of the Year in both 1976 and 1977. After his college career, Bordiuk returned to coach at his alma mater from 1985-1991, where he was the Men's Assistant Coach from 1985-1987. In 1987, he was credited with starting the Women's Cross Country and Track & Field programs, which won two NEC Championships. He has also served as a team physician since 1985.

John Haas'72 was a four-year member of the Monmouth basketball program, tallying 1,470 career points and 1,560 career rebounds during his tenure with the Hawks. A three-time First-Team All-State Selection by the New Jersey Basketball Writers Association, Haas registered the second highest field goal percentage in the nation (71.1%), which is still a Monmouth record, during his junior season. Haas ranked in the top ten in total rebounds in the nation as a junior, and received NCAA and NAIA All-American Honorable Mention citations following his senior campaign.

William Kiss'77, who was a 16-time All-American during his four years at Monmouth, set numerous school records (50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 freestyle) in 1974, and established a new national mark in the 200 yard freestyle in 1975. In 1975, Kiss was crowned the national champion in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle, was selected the New Jersey Collegiate Swimmer of the Year, was ranked top-25 in the world in the 200 meter freestyle and was the AAU Eastern Champion and record holder in the 200 meter. Kiss was part of a 400 yard freestyle team that won a National AAU Championship, was ranked fourth in the world and held the American record. Kiss, who coupled his national championship status in the 100 and 200 once again in 1977, was also an assistant coach under 2007 Monmouth Hall of Fame inductee Dick Steadman in 1978, where he helped guide the team to a conference title and a second place finish at the national championships.

Joan Martin played an integral part in Monmouth Athletics for 33 years, serving as an associate athletics director, assistant athletics director, senior woman administrator and compliance director, as well as a coach during her time in West Long Branch. Martin joined the Monmouth staff in as a coach in 1969 and coached until 1982, when she joined the athletic administration. Martin was the women's basketball coach for 13 years, and mentored the softball (11 years) and field hockey (eight years) programs as well.

Barbara Paterno Clark'80 was a four-year member of the Monmouth women's basketball team, and one of the first-ever athletes to record 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. A two-time Monmouth College Most Outstanding Athlete in both 1979 and 1980, Paterno Clark averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds per game during her tenure with the Blue and White. Paterno Clark, who was the team MVP in 1976-77 and a New Jersey Collegiate Basketball All-Star, was drafted by the WBL and played professionally in Europe. Paterno Clark also played volleyball and softball during her time at Monmouth.

William Terry'77 was a 1,000-point scorer for the Hawks during his time at Monmouth, registering 1,447 career points. A fifth round draft choice of the New York Knicks in 1977. Terry was the Rookie of the Year in the Colonial Basketball Association (CBA) in 1978 with the Jersey Shore Bullets and played professionally in Buenos Aires, Argentina for Club Ferrocarril Oeste from 1979 to 1982. A two-time Argentine Club Basketball Champion in 1980-81 and 1981-82, Terry also competed with Marathon Oil Chicago in 1985.

The Monmouth University Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1981 to recognize, honor, and perpetuate the achievements of members of the Monmouth University family who have made outstanding contributions to Monmouth University athletics. These individuals have helped to bring recognition, honor, distinction, and excellence to Monmouth University and its athletic programs. Last year, the Hall of Fame inducted Olympic Gold Medal swimmer Wendy Boglioli, Former Major League Baseball pitcher Ed Halicki, NAIA Baseball All-American James LaRusso, U.S. Women's Soccer National Team Captain Christie Rampone, the "Founding Father" of Monmouth Athletics Abe Schwartz and legendary Swimming and Diving Coach Dick Steadman.

The Hall of Fame Selection Committee solicited alumni and the general public for the names of eligible nominees.
