CLEARWATER, FL – Behind a complete game shutout from pitcher Sydney Underhill, the Monmouth University softball team got four RBI from Justene Reyes and Katie Baron to down Army Wednesday afternoon, 6-0. Despite two-run home runs from both Alex Holzman and Justene Reyes, Monmouth was edged by Indiana State in the first game of the day, 6-5. The Hawks split moves them to a 3-11 record on the season, and will take on Colgate tomorrow at 1:00 PM.

 

NOTES AND QUOTES

“We played and won 13 innings today. When we play 14 we will be a dangerous team. It was great to see a lot of different people step up today. Sydney pitched outstanding today and did a great job of working out of jams. We continue to focus on us and being better in all facets of the game.” - Monmouth head coach Shannon Salsburg

-In game one against Indiana State, the Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to Holzman's first home run of the season.

-Indiana State cut Monmouth's lead in half in the top of the third, and tied the game in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly.

-The Hawks took the 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth after Reyes' two-run shot that scored Katie Baron.

-The Sycamores scored four runs in the sixth to take the 6-4 lead. MU committed two errors in the inning.

-Monmouth got a run back in the sixth inning, as Morgan Balderas doubled to right center before Amber Wozniak singled her home. The Hawks had a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh, but could not bring her home and were defeated 6-5.

-In game two against Army, Deangie Jimenez hit an RBI double to score Balderas in the second inning.

-Monmouth broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to take the 5-0 advantage. Baron hit an RBI double to score Jimenez before Chloe Howerth singled through the left side to score Baron. Reyes continued her successful day, hitting a 2-RBI double that scored Howerth and Shotzbarger.

-Baron picked up her second RBI of the game in the sixth inning, hitting an RBI double to score Wozniak.

-Underhill pitched 7.0 innings while giving up no runs in the win against Army. She gave up seven hits and struck out three batters.

-In her career, Underhill has racked up 44 wins (6th all-time), 131 games (1st all-time), 92 starts (3rd all-time), 559.3 innings pitched (4th all-time), and 327 strikeouts (5th all-time).

 

UP NEXT

The Hawks will play six games in the next four days, including a 1:00 PM matchup with Colgate tomorrow.
