WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS AT ROBERT MORRIS, 56-38

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA – Shooting just 14-45 from the field and 3-16 from three, the Monmouth University women's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest at Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon, 56-38. Sophomore guard Kayla Shaw scored half of Monmouth's 38 points, netting 19 on three triples. Senior Rhaiah Spooner-Knight added eight points and five rebounds in the loss. The Hawks fall to 2-6 on the season, and will look to snap a two-game skid at Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday. After taking on the Knights, the Hawks will return to West Long Branch for home matchups with Virginia Tech and George Washington before beginning MAAC play at Marist on December 30.
 
NOTES AND QUOTES

-The teams were nearly dead even after the first quarter, with Robert Morris holding the slight 10-9 lead. Spooner-Knight led the Hawks with three points and three rebounds, including two offensive, in the first frame.
-Robert Morris opened the second quarter with a 10-2 run. Shaw buried her second triple to make it 20-14, but the Colonials answered to take a 22-14 lead. The Hawks were forced to call a timeout, trailing by eight with 5:28 left in the first half.
-An 8-0 run to end the half gave the Colonials a 30-18 lead at halftime. For the second consecutive game, the Hawks were kept under 20 first half points.
-The Hawks outscored the Colonials by a margin of 13-10 in the third quarter, but Robert Morris maintained a 40-31 lead heading into the fourth.
-Shaw scored two layups on consecutive possessions to open the fourth quarter, but Robert Morris had an answer for both to maintain a nine-point lead.
-Robert Morris began to pull away in the final minutes, eventually taking the 56-38 win.

NUMBERS CRUNCH
-Shaw scored in double-figures for the seventh time this season, and 26th time in her 39-game career. She's also 11-12 from the free throw line this season.
-Sophomore Adriana Zelaya earned her first career start. She dished a career-high three assists and matched a career-high of four rebounds.
-Five different Hawks played at least 20 minutes.
-Sophomore Alexa Middleton grabbed six rebounds, and now leads the team with 51 on the season.
-Junior McKinzee Barker added four points and a season-high six rebounds in the loss.
 
UP NEXT
Monmouth will take to the road for the last time until December 30 when they travel to Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday at 7:00 PM. After the matchup with the Knights, the Hawks will return to the OceanFirst Bank Center to host Virginia Tech on December 12 and George Washington on December 22.
