JASMINE WALKER NAMED MAAC HONOREE FOR NCAA WOMAN OF THE YEAR

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth University women's basketball recent graduate Jasmine Walker (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) has been honored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as one of its two honorees for NCAA Woman of the Year, the NCAA and MAAC today announced. Walker earned her Masters of Business Administration with a 3.74 grade point average as a captain of the Hawks. She is a three-time MAAC All-Academic team member and graduated with the highest degree in economics and finance at Monmouth, earning magna cum laude honors.

On the court, Walker was a four-year contributor, starting 73 of her 116 games played. Her 116 games played rank sixth all-time in program history, while her .735 career free throw percentage is fifth at MU. She averaged 8.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 78.0 percent from the free-throw line and posting one double-double as a senior. Walker scored a season-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting in the Hawks' Dec. 29 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn and scored at least seven points in the last seven games of the season, including all five games in Monmouth's season-long five-game winning streak fom Feb. 19-Mar. 5. Included were four-straight games with at least 10 points to end the streak.

There are 142 total female student-athletes nominated for the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Two of the honorees also will represent the United States at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

In early September, the Woman of the Year selection committee will name the Top 30 honorees, representing the top 10 women in each division. The selection committee will then choose and announce the nine finalists, with three from each division, at the end of September. Then, from the pool of nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will determine the 2016 Woman of the Year.

The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at the annual banquet Oct. 16 in Indianapolis.

The NCAA Woman of the Year program has recognized graduating female student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership since its inception in 1991.
