WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Lafayette's Luke Cummings broke a 10-10 tie with 4:19 remaining to lift the visiting Leopards over the Monmouth men's lacrosse team on Tuesday afternoon at Monmouth Stadium.
The back-and-forth contest featured six ties and six lead changes and seven different Monmouth players scored in the loss. Freshman
Eamon Campbell (Massapequa, NY / St. Anthony's) recorded a hat trick and junior
Chris Daly (Wynnewood, PA / Lower Merion) added two goals and an assist to lead the Hawks offensively. Campbell also extended his points streak to seven games.
Lafayette jumped out to a 3-1 lead late in the first quarter before Campbell put in his second goal of the game off a feed from Daly. The Hawks trimmed the deficit to one and the goal ignited a run of three consecutive tallies for Monmouth.
Dan Bloodgood's (Jackson, NJ / Freehold Township) man-up goal tied the game at 3-3 midway through the second quarter, before
Chandler Vanderbeek (Bridgewater, NJ / Immaculata [High Point]) gave Monmouth its first lead 30 seconds later.
Lafayette countered with consecutive scores to take the lead (5-4), before Monmouth ripped off four straight goals surrounding halftime to go up 8-5 with 9:14 to play in the third quarter. Daly scored both his goals during the spurt, including a shot just under the crossbar that tied the game, while
Griffin Figel (Basking Ridge, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) and
Eric Berger (Ardsley, PA / Penn Charter) each netted unassisted goals for the Hawks.
The Leopards refused to go away and scored three straight to tie the game and five of the next six overall to go up 10-9 with 9:21 remaining in the fourth quarter. Lafayette's Kevin Lewis and Eric Joseph each completed hat tricks during the run and Dillon Confalone gave the Leopards the one-goal advantage.
Fifteen seconds after Confalone's marker, Campbell tied the game again when
Gordon Phillips set him up with his second assist of the day.
Nearly five minutes later, Cummings' goal proved to be the difference and Lafayette held off a number of late chances for the Hawks in the closing minutes.
In goal,
Nick Hreshko (Warrington, PA / La Salle College H.S.) totaled 11 saves and picked up a team-high five ground balls, and also assisted Vanderbeek's second-quarter goal.
Lafayette took advantage of an 18-7 faceoff margin as Michael Sullivan (18-25) led the Leopards and collected a game-high 11 ground balls. The visitors held a 28-22 lead in that category.
Monmouth faces an extended break before conference play resumes on Saturday, April 16, when it hosts Detroit Mercy in a noon faceoff.
