WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Detroit scored five times in the final 15 minutes to knock off the Monmouth men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon at Monmouth Stadium. Kyle Beauregard netted three of his four goals in the fourth quarter to back the comeback win for the Titans.
Both teams sit at 2-2 in MAAC play with the result, with Monmouth at 6-5 and Detroit at 2-8 overall with two conference games remaining.
Rookie attack Eamon Campbell (Massapequa, NY / St. Anthony's) earned his second consecutive hat trick and added an assist to extend his point streak to eight games for Monmouth in the loss. Junior attack Chris Daly (Wynnewood, PA / Lower Merion) contributed two goals and two assists, while Dylan Schulte (Southampton, NJ /Seneca [Bridgeton Academy]), Dan Bloodgood (Jackson, NJ / Freehold Township) and Eric Berger (Ardsley, PA / Penn Charter) had one goal apiece.
Schulte's unassisted goal midway through the opening quarter was the lone tally in the period before Bloodgood and Daly added markers to start the second quarter as Monmouth secured a 3-0 lead.
The Hawks extended the advantage to 4-0 with 6:47 left in the first half when Daly fed Campbell on a man-up goal. Detroit answered with a pair of goals by Patrick Walsh and Lucas Ducharme (man-up) to close the half and Monmouth held a 4-2 cushion at the break.
Campbell scored his second of the day to make it 5-2 a little more than five minutes into the third quarter, but Detroit stormed in front with four straight goals as Beauregard ignited the run with an unassisted score at the 7:04 mark.
The visiting Titans made it 5-4 with 3:55 left in the third as Andy Hebden closed the gap to one, before Beauregard put home two early in the fourth quarter.
Facing a one-goal deficit with 12 minutes remaining, Berger knotted the score at 6-6 (11:29), but a minute later Beauregard ripped his fourth past Monmouth goalie Nick Hreshko (Warrington, PA / La Salle College H.S.) to give the lead back to the Titans. Daly tied the game again when Campbell set him up with 7:39 left, before Detroit seized control for good.
Hebden's second goal of the contest with 4:20 left made it 8-7 and Austin Polson-McCannon scored with Hreshko out of the goal with 1:36 left.
Campbell's third goal came with 5.7 seconds left, but Detroit won the final faceoff to hang on for the 9-8 triumph. Faceoffs were 14-7 in favor of Detroit, the Titans held a 28-24 edge in ground balls and they scored on both extra-man opportunities.
Hreshko finished with 11 saves, while his counterpart Jason Weber made 14 stops on the other end. Defensively, sophomore Cooper Glass (Highlands Ranch, CO / Arapahoe) picked up a team-high four ground balls and caused two turnovers and junior Neil Ruppert (Chester, MD / St. Mary's) caused three turnovers and collected three ground balls.
MAAC play continues when the Hawks hosts Quinnipiac on Senior Day, next Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live online on ESPN3.
