WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Adriana Armendariz (Pamplona, Spain/Colegio San Ignacio [Maryville]), Alexandra Graff (Bastad, Sweden/IMG Academy) and Kendal Kauffman (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) each won at both singles and doubles as the Monmouth University women's tennis team defeated Fairfield, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the MU Outdoor Tennis Complex. With the win, the Hawks improve to 6-12 (2-4 MAAC), while the Stags fall to 1-14 (1-3 MAAC).
"Our doubles play was excellent today," said Monmouth Head Coach Patrice Murray. "We have been close and finally got the job done."
The Hawks took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Armendariz and Kauffman paired at No. 1 to defeat Courtney Connors and Karen McKeough, 6-2, before Graff and Maria Ivanova (Moscow, Russia/IMG Academy) combined on a 6-3 victory over Gabriella Campos and Cecilia Parla at No. 2 to clinch the point. Fairfield's Nicole Aragones and Meghan Ziegler took No. 3 doubles, 6-2, over Chioma Gabriel (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and Rayne Ruoff (Reading, PA/Exeter Twp Sr.).
Gabriel made quick work of Campos, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, while Graff also earned a straight-sets victory over McKeough, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2. Armendariz clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Aragones at No. 1. Kauffman also got past Connors in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 10-7, at No. 5.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday, when they travel to longtime conference foe Quinnipiac. First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m.
