Monmouth Hawks (2-4, 0-1 MAAC) at Canisius Golden Griffins (1-5, 0-1 MAAC)
After Monmouth snapped a three-game losing streak at Lehigh on November 27, the Hawks fell to Niagara in their conference opener on Friday night. The 66-45 loss drops Monmouth's record to 2-4 on the season, and the team looks forward to another Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Sunday at Canisius. Tyese Purvis leads the team in scoring at 11.5 points per game, while freshman Kayla Shaw has made a three-pointer in every game this year, including four against Hartford and five at Lehigh. Senior forward Christina Mitchell has amassed 25 points and 25 rebounds over Monmouth's last three games.
SCOUTING THE CANISIUS GOLDEN GRIFFINS
Canisius has fallen to a 1-5 overall record in the early part of the season, and were defeated by Rider 71-70 in the first conference game of the season. The Golden Griffins cut Rider's lead to just one with 19 seconds left after a Sarah Cooley 3-pointer but couldn't pull out the win. Canisius features three scorers in double-figures and five players averaging at least 9.0 points per game. The team is led by junior guard Sara Hinriksdottir (13.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 3.5 apg) and senior guard Lauren D'Hont (13.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg). D'Hont scored a season-high 24 points in a loss at St. Francis on November 22, while Saliah Serrette poured in 23 points during their one-point loss to Rider on Friday.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. CANISIUS GOLDEN GRIFFINS
Monmouth and Canisius will be meeting for just the eighth time, as the Hawks have a 4-3 all-time advantage. The series began in 2013-14 after Monmouth joined the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. In the first career matchup on January 10 of that year, Monmouth beat the Golden Griffins at home by a score of 64-56. A week later, Canisius got revenge on its home floor, besting the Hawks 60-52. Monmouth swept the series last year, defeating Canisius at home on February 7 by a score of 79-75, while also winning in Buffalo on February 21, 81-71. Tyese Purvis scored 31 total points in those games, including a career-high 21 points (5-12 3FG) on the road.
