WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Sophomore
Maria Ivanova (Moscow, Russia/IMG Academy) earned a straight-sets victory at No. 6 singles, but the Monmouth University women's tennis team fell to Sacred Heart, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at the MU Outdoor Tennis Complex. With the loss, the Hawks dip to 1-3, while the Pioneers improve to 1-1.
The Pioneers took the doubles point with wins by 6-4 and 6-3 margins, respectively, at Nos. 1 and 2. Monmouth forfeited the third doubles flight.
Ivanova won at No. 6 over Tori Oates, 7-6 (3), 2-0. However, the Pioneers would take the remaining five singles flights and the match by a 6-1 margin.
Victoria Nugent (Elsinboro, NJ/Pennsville Memorial) and
Chioma Gabriel (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) each won their first sets, but fell in third-set 10-point tie-breakers at Nos. 2 and 4, respectively.
Monmouth returns to action Tuesday, when the Hawks play host to hOURglass rival Saint Peter's. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
