SAINT PETER'S EDGES WOMEN'S BASKETBALL, 67-62

Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ – Saint Peter's outscored the Monmouth University women's basketball team, 18-8, over the final seven minutes of the fourth quarter to take a 67-62 victory Wednesday night at the Yanitelli Center. Sarah Olson (Freehold, NJ/Howell [NJIT]) led the Hawks with 14 points. With the hOURglass Rivalry victory, the Peacocks improve to 3-10 (1-3 MAAC), while the Hawks fall to 4-9 (2-2 MAAC).

Jasmine Walker (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) and Jasmine McCall (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan [Seton Hall]) added 12 points apiece off the bench for Monmouth. Jamiyah Bethune (Union, NJ/Union [Penn State]) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds, while Christina Mitchell (Baltimore, MD/MATHS) chipped in with 12 rebounds and three assists.

Hala Mostafa led Saint Peter's with a double-double of 21 points, nine in the fourth quarter, and 10 rebounds. Sajanna Bethea added 17 points and six rebounds, while Talah Hughes finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists off the bench for the Peacocks. Saint Peter's shot 52.1 percent (12-23) in the second half and made 12-of-15 free throws in the fourth quarter to take advantage of an 8-3 foul discrepancy in the period. Monmouth was whistled for its fifth foul of the period with 6:08 left on the clock, sending SPU to the line for the remainder of the quarter.   

A back-and-forth first nine and a half minutes of the initial quarter left the game knotted at 12-12. Dana Carbone (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) completed a conventional three-point play with 18 seconds left and a turnover forced by the Hawks' full-court press resulted in a Bethune bucket in the paint to give Monmouth a 17-12 lead after one. The Hawks' lead swelled to seven points on a McCall driving lay-up with 2:52 left in the half. The teams exchanged buckets twice, before Saint Peter's ended the period on a Marcia Senatus jumper with three seconds left to cut the Hawks' lead to 32-27 at the break.

Walker led the Hawks with eight points in the first half, including six in the second quarter. Bethune and Olson added seven points apiece, with Bethune also grabbing six rebounds. Carbone also chipped in with five points, while Mitchell paced MU with seven boards and two assists. Bethea led Saint Peter's with eight points, while Mostafa added six points and five rebounds. The Peacocks outshot Monmouth, 43.3 percent (13-30) to 34.1 percent (14-41) from the floor, but the Hawks generated extra possessions with an 11-3 advantage on the offensive glass and a 7-5 edge in turnovers.

Saint Peter's scored the final five points of the third quarter to cut the Hawks' lead to 43-42 after three and took its first lead of the game on two Hughes free throws with just over eight minutes left in the period. Olson immediately responded with a pair of three-pointers to give Monmouth a 54-49 lead with 7:12 remaining. After the Peacocks tied the game on a bucket from Mostafa with 5:30 left, McCall buried a three to give the lead back to the Hawks. Mostafa responded with a three of her own on the next SPU possession, before Tyese Purvis (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis (Monroe C.C.]) and Bethea exchanged buckets to again knot the game at 59-59 with just over three minutes remaining.

Olson made 1-of-2 free throws with 2:48 left, but Bethea knocked down a jumper from the baseline with 2:27 left to give the Peacocks the lead for good. Saint Peter's outscored Monmouth, 8-2, to end the game, including the last six points from the free-throw line in the final 1:13.

For the game, Saint Peter's outshot Monmouth, 47.2 percent (25-53) to 33.3 percent (25-75) from the floor and 71.4 percent (15-21) to 55.6 percent (5-9) from the free-throw line. Monmouth shot 21.9 percent (7-32) from long range to the Peacocks' 16.7 percent (2-12). Both teams grabbed 42 rebounds, with Monmouth taking a 19-8 edge on the offensive glass. Saint Peter's took a 30-20 advantage on points in the paint, while Monmouth's bench outscored that of the Peacocks, 29-19.    

The Hawks return to action Sunday, when they play host to Marist. Opening tip from the Multipurpose Activity Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
