MARIST DEFEATS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL, 78-55

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NYDanica Dragicevic (Belgrade, Serbia/XV Beogradska Gimnazija) compiled her first-career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, but the Monmouth University women's basketball team was defeated by Marist, 78-55, Sunday afternoon at McCann Arena. The Red Foxes (7-11, 6-2 MAAC) used a 15-0 run in the first quarter and a 20-2 spurt covering the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters to secure the victory. The Hawks fall to 5-11 (3-4 MAAC) with the setback.

Dragicevic made 6-of-9 field-goal attempts and scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half. Six of her 10 boards came on the offensive glass. Jamiyah Bethune (Union, NJ/Union [Penn State]) added 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. Christina Mitchell (Baltimore, MD/MATHS) chipped in with six points and 11 rebounds, her 10th game with double-figure boards this season.  

Tori Jarosz led Marist with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Maura Fitzpatrick chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds. Allie Clement also added nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from long range.

After an evenly-played first five minutes that saw Marist take a 12-11 lead, the Red Foxes scored the final 15 points of the first quarter to take a 27-11 lead after one. Jarosz led Marist with 12 points in the period. The Hawks countered with the first five points of the second quarter and then gradually whittled the deficit to eight on two occasions. But Marist ended the half with five-straight points on a Jarosz lay-up and a three from Claire Oberdorf at the second-half buzzer to take a 41-28 lead into the break.

Tyese Purvis (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis [Monroe C.C.]) and Bethune led Monmouth with six points apiece at the break, while Mitchell grabbed six rebounds in spite of limited minutes due to a pair of early fouls. Jarosz led Marist with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Fitzpatrick added six points on a pair of three-pointers.

The Marist lead remained between nine and 13 points for the duration of the third quarter, a period in which Bethune led the Hawks with five points, while Mitchell grabbed five boards. The Red Foxes took a 54-43 advantage after three. From the 1:59 mark of the third quarter until there were just under five minutes left in the fourth, Marist outscored Monmouth, 20-2, to put the game away.

For the game, Marist outshot Monmouth, 45.8 percent (27-59) to 26.8 percent (19-71) from the floor, 40.9 percent (9-22) to 17.9 percent (5-28) from long range and 75.0 percent (15-20) to 63.2 percent (12-19) from the free-throw line. The Hawks outrebounded Marist, 47-43, and took a 19-5 edge in second-chance points.   

The Hawks return to league action on the road Thursday, when they travel to hOURglass rival Rider. The Kids Day tip-off is slated for 11 a.m. at Alumni Gym.
