WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Juniors
Adriana Armendariz (Pamplona, Spain/Colegio San Ignacio [Maryville]) and
Kendal Kauffman (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) won singles matches at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively, but the Monmouth University women's tennis team fell to Wagner, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon at the MU Tennis Courts. The Seahawks (3-1) won the doubles point, as well as singles matches at Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 6 to secure the victory.
Wagner took the doubles point, winning all three matches. Marina Rull Valvieso and Avika Sagwal defeated Armendariz and freshman
Alexandra Graff (Bastad, Sweden/IMG Academy), 6-4, at the top flight, before Samantha Hodges and Rina Baynes clinched the doubles point at No. 3 with a 6-3 win over junior
Chioma Gabriel (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and freshman
Rayne Ruoff (Reading, PA/Exeter Twp Sr.). Kauffman and freshman
Maria Ivanova (Moscow, Russia/IMG Academy) gave Madison Pautsch and Jenna Harris all they could handle at No. 2 before falling in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (5).
Harris extended Wagner's lead to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1, victory over Ruoff at No. 6, before Sagval put the match on the brink with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Graff at No. 2. Armendariz kept the Hawks' hopes alive with a straight-sets victory over her fellow Spaniard Rull Valvieso, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1. But the Seahawks clinched the match on Pautsch's 7-5, 6-2, victory over Ivanova at No. 5.
After Baynes completed a 6-3, 6-4, win over Gabriel at No. 4, Kauffman wrapped up the match by rebounding from a dropped first set to defeat Hodges, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday, Sept. 29, when they travel to Fairfield, CT, to take on former conference foe Sacred Heart. The match is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
