STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Senior Farrah Smoke (Belmar, N.J./Manasquan [Brookdale C.C.]) and sophomores Kendal Kauffman (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Chioma Gabriel (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) each recorded wins, but the Monmouth University women's tennis team fell to Wagner, 4-3, in non-conference action, Wednesday afternoon at the Wagner Tennis Courts.
Smoke and Kauffman, playing No. 2 doubles, earned an 8-4 win over Jenna Harris and Carolyn Gibson and the Hawks nearly clinched the point at No. 1, but Marina Rull Valvieso and Madison Pautsch held off Adriana Armendariz (Pamplona, Spain/Colegio San Ignacio) and Ashley Sandler (Jericho, N.Y./Syosset), 8-6. Wagner's Samantha Hodges and Rachel Jurgielewicz downed Gabriel and Sarah Turner (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) at No. 3 to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, Smoke rallied from a first set defeat to down Pautsch 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, while Kauffman, playing No. 4, earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jurgielewicz. Gabriel upended Harris 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5, but Wagner earned victories at No. 1, 2 and 6 to earn the win.
Monmouth returns to action on Saturday, April 4th with a conference tilt with Niagara. First serve from the MU Tennis Courts is slated for 11:00 a.m.
