BERGER'S LATE GOAL LIFTS HAWKS TO 5-4 WIN OVER SIENA

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Sophomore Eric Berger (Ardsley, Pa./Penn Charter) registered the game-winning goal with 1:13 remaining to lift Monmouth University to its first-ever Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse victory on Saturday afternoon, as the Hawks defeated defending league champion Siena 5-4 at Monmouth Stadium.

With the game tied at 4-4 for the entire fourth quarter, freshman Bryce Wasserman (Southlake, Texas/Grapevine Faith) found Berger for his second tally of the game, the game-winner, with 1:13 showing. Sophomore Marco Mosleh (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) won the ensuing faceoff for the Hawks, who were able to run the clock, snapping the Saints' eight-game conference win streak.

"I was proud of the effort today, because it took grit and determination for us to get the job done," stated head coach Brian Fisher, whose Hawks are now 4-3 on the season. "Coming out of halftime, we knew if we cleaned a few things up, we would give ourselves a chance to win in the fourth quarter. I am excited we were able to make the plays we needed at the end, and come out with a win."

Trailing 1-0 in the first, senior Ryan Schwartz (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) scooped up a groundball off a saved shot attempt and fired home the equalizer with 12:26 remaining. Siena's Nate Barry, who scored the first three goals for the Saints, notched consecutive scores in the second stanza to give the visitors a 3-1 lead at the break.

Mosleh won the second-half opening faceoff for the Hawks, raced down the field and fed sophomore Chris Daly (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) just eight seconds into the quarter to pull the Hawks within 3-2, while Schwartz's second score the game, off a feed from Wasserman, knotted the contest at 3-3 with 10:05 left in the third period.

Siena retook a 4-3 lead on Chris Robertson's eighth of the season with 7:29 showing, before Wasserman and Berger connected as time expired on the third quarter, tying the game at 4-4.

Siena outshot Monmouth 34-28 in the contest, as senior Garrett Conaway (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) made 13 saves for the Hawks, improving his record to 4-3 on the year. Tommy Cordts made four saves in the opening 30 minutes for the Saints, while Nick Capalbo registered three second half stops, while earning the loss.

Wasserman recorded a season-high three assists for Monmouth, while Mosleh's assist was the midfielder's first career point for the Blue & White.

Monmouth returns to action on Tuesday, March 24th, when the Hawks host Lehigh University at 3:00 p.m. in non-conference action, which is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN3.
