MEN'S LACROSSE EARNS 6-3 VICTORY AT NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. - Monmouth University sophomore Zack Schleicher (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) registered his first career multi-point game with a goal and an assist, to help lead the Hawks to a 6-3 victory at NJIT in men's lacrosse action on Tuesday night at Lubetkin Field.

Monmouth, now 3-3 overall, broke open a 2-2 tie in the second quarter with four straight goals to lead 6-2 with 2:44 remaining in the third period.

"It certainly wasn't pretty tonight, but I am proud of the effort and glad that we found a way to get the job done," stated head coach Brian Fisher. "While we still have a lot of things to clean up, I loved that we played with a lot of energy and kept pressure on them throughout the game. We certainly know what it feels like to be in their position and I think Travis Johnson [NJIT's coach] and his staff are doing a good job with a gritty and young team."

After NJIT took a 1-0 lead in the first stanza, the Hawks knotted the game at 1-1 with 1:49 left in the first on John Castellano's (Eastchester, N.Y./Iona Prep/Curry College) first career goal. With 3:07 left in the half, Eric Berger (Ardsley, Pa./Penn Charter) netted an unassisted score to give Monmouth a 2-1 edge, but Joe Lomeli's second of the contest tied the game at 2-2 just 11 seconds later.

Ryan Schwartz (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) scored his first goal of the season with 2:08 remaining in the half, off of Reed Zak's (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) first career point to reclaim the lead for the Hawks, while freshman Bryce Wasserman (Southlake, Texas/Grapevine Faith) tallied his team-leading ninth goal of the year with just two seconds showing, to put the Blue & White in front 4-2 at the break.

Monmouth took a 5-2 lead on Schleicher's second of the season with 3:23 left in the third frame, while the sophomore assisted on Zach Johannes' (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) goal with 2:44 showing as the Hawks held a 6-2 lead through three periods.

Monmouth held a 47-19 edge in shots, while senior goalkeeper Garrett Conaway (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) made three saves. Sophomore Nick Hreshko (Warrington, Pa./LaSalle College) made one save for the Hawks.

Monmouth returns to action on Saturday, when the Hawks host Siena in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Monmouth Stadium at 1:00 p.m., and will be broadcast on ESPN3. The day's events start with a FREE youth clinic (grades 3-8) from 10-11:15 a.m. on Kessler Field at Monmouth Stadium, sponsored by Trilogy Lacrosse, while the Hawks' game versus Siena will be in honor of the Wounded Warrior Project and Veterans Appreciation Day.
