QUINNIPIAC DEFEATS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL, 87-48

Box Score WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.Jasmine Walker (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) had a team-high 12 points, but the Monmouth University women's basketball team fell to MAAC Regular Season Champion Quinnipiac, 87-48, Sunday afternoon at the Multipurpose Activity Center. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 12-17 (8-12 MAAC), while the Bobcats become the first team in the 20-game MAAC league slate era to finish undefeated in conference play at 28-3 (20-0 MAAC). Monmouth will take the No. 9 seed in the MAAC Championships and face eighth-seeded Canisius in the first round at 9:30 Thursday morning at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y.

Sara English (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West [UMass]), Jamiyah Bethune (Union, N.J./Union [Penn State]) and Jenny Horvatinovic (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) finished with six points apiece, with Bethune adding a team-high eight rebounds. Helena Kurt (Spanga, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) dished out four assists for the Hawks.

Val Driscoll led Quinnipiac with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four blocks. Maria Napolitano matched Driscoll's 17 points, while Samantha Guastella (15) and Jasmine Martin (14) also finished in double figures. Gillian Abshire dished out a game-high nine assists.

After a back-and-forth first 11 minutes had Quinnipiac ahead, 12-11, the Bobcats went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 19-11. Following four-straight Monmouth points on buckets from Walker and Sophie Beaudry (Chambly, Quebec/College Dawson), Quinnipiac responded with a 9-0 run to cap a 13-2 stretch later, resulting in a 32-17 discrepancy. The lead extended to 17 points on a Driscoll lay-up off an inbounds play with 48 seconds left in the period, before Horvatinovic converted a fast-break lay-up off a Walker feed to cut the deficit to 15 at the half.

Horvatinovic led Monmouth with six points at the half, while Beaudry and Walker had four points apiece. Bethune grabbed five rebounds for the Hawks. Martin led Quinnipiac with 12 points, while Driscoll added 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Abshire dished out six assists in the first half.

Following a Walker bucket to open the second half, Quinnipiac hit four-straight threes to extend to a 49-24 advantage less than three minutes into the period. Monmouth responded with six-straight points, but again Quinnipiac had the answer with a 10-0 run to stretch its lead to 61-32 with 10:37 left. Quinnipiac gradually worked its lead up to its largest point with the final 87-48 score.

For the game, Quinnipiac outshot Monmouth, 39.4 percent (28-71) to 31.3 percent (21-67) from the floor, 35.0 percent (14-40) to 12.5 percent (3-24) from long range and 70.8 percent (17-24) to 42.9 percent (3-7) from the free-throw line. Quinnipiac also took a 55-41 edge on the boards.
