The Purple Eagles also fell on Friday at Manhattan, 80-62. The Jaspers took the lead midway through the first quarter and never trailed again. Tiffany Corselli led Niagara with 16 points, while Sam Lapszynski added 14 points and nine rebounds.
SCOUTING THE NIAGARA PURPLE EAGLESThe Purple Eagles are in their first season under Head Coach Jada Pierce, who'd spent the prior 17 years in Division I and II, including a two-year stint (2004-06) as Head Coach at Division II Cheyney University. Preseason All-MAAC First Team selection Victoria Rampado leads Niagara at 13.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. However, she hasn't played in the last three games. Reigning MAAC Player of the Week Sam Lapszynski is next at 12.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, while Kaylee Stroemple and Taylor McKay have each averaged 11.0 points per game. Stroemple has also grabbed 6.2 rebounds and distributed a team-best 4.0 assists per game. Tiffany Corselli is close to double figures at 9.3 points per game.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. NIAGARANiagara leads the all-time series with Monmouth, 3-2. The Purple Eagles won the first two meetings in 2013-14, both in the regular season, before the Hawks knocked them off in the MAAC Championship First Round. Each team won on the road last season, with Niagara cruising to a 59-45 win in West Long Branch and the Hawks earning a hard-fought 81-69 double-overtime victory in Western New York.
LAST TIME OUTIn spite of 13 points and a career-high 21 rebounds from
Christina Mitchell, the Hawks dropped their conference opener to Siena, 69-63, Friday night at the MAC.
Jamiyah Bethune scored a game-high 16 points and
Tyese Purvis added 14 points.
McKinzee Barker contributed nine points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals for MU.
