Monmouth scored a 63-54 win over former conference foe St. Francis Brooklyn on Tuesday, while La Salle advanced to the championship game with a 67-59 win over Norfolk State in Tuesday's opener.
SCOUTING THE LA SALLE EXPLORERSAmy Griffin leads La Salle at 15.3 points per game to go along with 5.9 rebounds per contest. Micahya Owens is close behind in the scoring column at 13.9 points per game, while Adreana Miller has chipped in at 9.1 points per game. Jasmine Alston leads the Explorers at 6.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game, while Ashanti Freeland has also made a strong contribution on the boards at 5.4 rebounds per game.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. LA SALLELa Salle owns a 2-1 edge in the all-time series with Monmouth. The last meeting, a 57-49 Monmouth win, came exactly six years ago in, you guessed it, the Hawk Holiday Classic Championship Game. La Salle won its two games in the series in the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons by scores of 62-60 and 67-66, respectively.
HAWK HOLIDAY CLASSIC HISTORYMonmouth has won the Hawk Holiday Classic twice in three prior tournaments. The Hawks won on their home court in Dec. 2009 and 2011 with wins over La Salle and Villanova, respectively, before falling in the opening round to Brown in 2010. Following a three year hiatus, the tournament in which the Hawks are 5-1 all-time, is back.
LAST TIME OUTJasmine Walker scored a game-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting as the Hawks held off St. Francis Brooklyn, 63-54, Tuesday afternoon at the MAC.
Sarah Olson and
Tyese Purvis also added 13 points apiece, with each hitting three trifectas.
Jamiyah Bethune contributed 11 points and seven assists, while
Christina Mitchell grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and blocked five shots.
