WOMEN'S BASKETBALL OVERCOMES COLGATE, 86-80, IN OT

Box Score HAMILTON, NY – Junior Tyese Purvis (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis [Monroe C.C.]) posted a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds and freshman McKinzee Barker (Bomont, WV/Clay County) narrowly missed a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds and nine assists as the Monmouth University women's basketball team outlasted Colgate in overtime, 86-80, Sunday afternoon at Cotterell Court. Sarah Olson (Freehold, NJ/Howell [NJIT]) hit a game-tying three-pointer with 11.3 seconds left in regulation and scored seven more points in overtime to finish with 10 points for the Hawks (1-2). Colgate falls to 0-3 with the loss.

Olson misfired on her first six shots of the day, including five three-point attempts, but made her last three when the Hawks needed it most to finish 3-of-8 from long range. Jasmine Walker (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Jamiyah Bethune (Union, NJ/Union [Penn State]) also scored in double figures with 12 points and eight rebounds. Purvis also made a team-high three steals for the Hawks.

Kateri Stone led Colgate with a game-high 24 points. Josie Stockill added 21 points, six blocks and four rebounds, while Paige Kriftcher also scored in double figures with 17 points.

“This was a really great team win today,” said Monmouth Head Coach Jenny Palmateer. “I was really proud of a couple of people in particular. I thought Ty Purvis and McKinzee Barker really did a great job for us and contributed in a lot of key areas with the scoring and rebounding. Colgate was a really scrappy team. I think they're really solid. They play Colgate basketball and they make you have to stop it. They did a great job getting some of the shots that they really wanted and made it tough and kept the game close for a really long time.”

After the teams exchanged early buckets, the Hawks scored six-straight points, including four from Bethune, to take an 11-4 lead. Colgate countered with 10 of the next 12 points to take its first lead of the game, 14-13, on a pair of Kriftcher free throws at the 2:21 mark. But Monmouth went on a 10-0 run to end the quarter and a 12-0 run into the second period to take a 25-14 lead.

The Hawks' advantage swelled to 16 points, 34-18, on a Purvis three-pointer at the 7:19 mark of the second quarter. But Colgate would outscore Monmouth, 18-5, over a span of almost six minutes to cut the Hawks' lead to three, 39-36. Stone scored seven points in the run. Following a timeout from Palmateer, Barker and Walker knocked down consecutive three-pointers to send the Hawks into the locker room with a 45-36 lead.

Bethune and Walker led Monmouth with 10 points apiece at the half, while Purvis added eight points. Barker chipped in with six points, six assists and four rebounds after 20 minutes. Stone and Stockill had 10 points each for Colgate.

A 10-0 Colgate run near the end of the third quarter gave the Raiders their first lead since the 2:21 mark of the first quarter. Two Rachel Odumu (Manassas, VA/Miller School of Albemarle) free throws knotted the game at 58-58 after three quarters.

The lead changed hands 11 times in the fourth quarter, with Tori Pozsonyi's fast-break lay-up with 2:42 left and Mylah Chandler's jumper with 2:19 remaining giving Colgate a 73-70 lead and marking the first occasion that either team strung together consecutive scoring in the quarter. Neither team could muster another point until the final minute. With the game clock at 15.1 seconds and the shot clock running down to four, Palmateer called timeout and put five three-point shooters on the floor. Barker inbounded to Dana Carbone (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) near the top of the key. She pumped at a three, but decided better of the attempt and deferred to Olson in the left corner. The senior buried the triple to tie the game at 73-73 with 11.3 seconds left. Randyll Butler's shot in the lane in the final seconds wouldn't fall, sending the game to overtime.

Stockill hit a jumper to open the overtime scoring and then fed Kriftcher for a three-point play and a five-point lead at the 3:42 mark. A Bethune lay-up and Olson three tied the game at 78-78 with 2:44 left in overtime, before Colgate retook the lead on Stockill's lay-up with 2:35 remaining. Olson then made 1-of-2 free throws and, following a Monmouth defensive stop, the senior buried her third three-pointer to give the Hawks the lead for good at 82-80 with 1:39 remaining. Monmouth got three more defensive stops and Walker connected on four-straight free throws to close out the victory.

“In overtime, I can't say enough about Sarah Olson and just really her ability to not be having the best game shooting-wise, to be out early with foul trouble and to be out of rhythm, but then to be able to come back and have the overtime that she did really speaks to what she's capable of,” said Palmateer.

For the game, the Raiders outshot the Hawks, 40.2 percent (33-82) to 37.8 percent (31-82) from the floor. Monmouth took a 38.2 percent (13-34) to 22.2 percent (4-18) advantage from long range, while Colgate edged the Hawks from the free-throw line, 71.4 percent (10-14) to 68.8 percent (11-16). Monmouth outrebounded Colgate, 56-49, while also enjoying a 28-14, discrepancy in bench scoring. The Raiders did much of their damage on the interior with a 50-28 advantage in the paint.

The Hawks return to action Saturday, when they travel to Providence. Tip-off from Alumni Hall is scheduled for 1 p.m.
