WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Freshman Adriana Armendariz (Pamplona, Spain/Colegio San Ignacio) and senior Farrah Smoke (Belmar, N.J./Manasquan [Brookdale C.C.]) each moved to 2-0 in singles play, but the Monmouth University women's tennis team fell to visiting Wagner, 5-2, Monday afternoon at the MU Tennis Courts. With the loss, the Hawks slip to 0-2 early in the season, while the Seahawks captured their third straight win to improve to 3-1.
Despite a valiant comeback effort by the No. 2 doubles squad of sophomores Kendal Kauffman (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Chioma Gabriel (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway), the Seahawks swept the doubles point to head into singles play up 1-0.
Armendariz, playing No. 1 for the first time in her career, opened her match with Samantha Hodges with a 6-1 win before falling 6-4 in the second set. The rookie cruised in the decisive third set, 10-3, to earn the point for the Blue and White. At No. 4, Smoke battled Madison Pautsch to a 6-3, 6-4 victory, but Wagner took the four other singles matches to escape with the win.
Monmouth returns to action tomorrow, September 30th, when it welcomes Sacred Heart to West Long Branch for a 3:00 p.m. tilt.
