WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – In its first event of the season, the Monmouth University women's tennis team fell to visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Saint Peter's University, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at the MU Tennis Courts. The Hawks (0-1, 0-1 MAAC) earned the doubles point before senior Farrah Smoke (Belmar, N.J./Manasquan [Brookdale C.C.]) and freshman Adriana Armendariz (Pamplona, Spain/Colegio San Ignacio) captured singles victories.
In doubles play, the duo of Smoke and Armendariz teamed up to down Saint Peter's (1-1, 1-0 MAAC) Adina Halagian and Lucia Radovic 8-6 at No. 1 and MU clinched the point when sophomore Robyn Belen (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) and Sarah Turner (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison), playing No. 3, recorded an 8-4 win over Claudia Hellman and Christian Resurreccion.
Armendariz, playing in her first collegiate match with the Hawks, cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over her No. 3 counterpart Radovic, while Smoke downed Malieva Hedberg 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4, but Saint Peter's took the four other singles matches to earn the league win.
Monmouth returns home Monday, September 29th at 3:30 when it takes on Wagner in a non-conference affair.
