STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Monmouth University women's tennis team won the doubles point before taking four of the six singles matches en route to its 5-2 victory over former conference foe Wagner, Tuesday afternoon at Wagner's Tennis Courts. With the victory, the Blue and White improves to 4-7 on the season, while the Seahawks fall to 4-6 on the year.
The No. 1 doubles team of Brooke Verdiglione (Englishtown, N.J./St. John Vianney) and Farrah Smoke (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan [Brookdale C.C.]) started the afternoon for the Hawks, scoring an 8-3 victory over Sarah Dionisio and Cassidy Lessard. After the Seahawks earned the win at No. 3, Ashley Sandler (Jericho, N.Y./Syosset) and Chioma Gabriel (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) held off Madison Pautsch and Kari Rezac, 8-6, at No. 2 to clinch the point for the Hawks.
In singles play, Sandler pushed MU ahead 2-0 with her 6-4, 7-5 win over Pautsch, while Verdiglione rallied from down a set to earn the 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 to give the Blue and White a commanding 3-0 advantage. Rachel Jurgielewicz put Wagner on the board with a win at No. 3, but the Hawks responded with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 to seal the second MU victory over Wagner this season. Kendal Kauffman (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) contained her No. 4 counterpart Jenna Harris with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win, while Gabriel, playing No. 5, earned an 8-3 victory over Lessard to cap off the Hawks' scoring.
The Hawks return to the courts on Thursday, April 3rd, when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. for a non-conference tilt with Lehigh at 3:30 p.m.
