Box Score HAMDEN, Conn. – Sara English (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West [UMass]) had six points and a career-high 16 rebounds in just 19 minutes, but the Monmouth University women's basketball team fell at Quinnipiac, 83-50, Sunday afternoon at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 6-21 (5-11 MAAC), while the Bobcats improve to 16-10 (11-5 MAAC).
Helena Kurt (Spanga, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) led the Hawks in the scoring column with 11 points, while Chevannah Paalvast (Auckland, New Zealand/Massey) added nine points and five rebounds. Jenny Horvatinovic (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) added seven points off the bench.
Brittany McQuain led a balanced Quinnipiac attack with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Jasmine Martin added 11 points, while Nikoline Ostergaard had 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting off the bench.
“Definitely not our best performance,” said Monmouth Head Coach Jenny Palmateer. “Honestly, I'm just really glad to get that one over with. We have to try hard to push that one way back in our memory banks and move forward. We have a lot of big games coming up and we don't want to take any more steps backward. We need to stay confident and keep working on what we've been doing well and move forward.”
Quinnipiac scored the game's first nine points and built a 14-point lead, 17-3 by the 9:11 mark. Monmouth gradually whittled the lead down to four points, 21-17, in large part because of four-straight Kurt points after the Bobcats were whistled for a common foul and technical foul consecutively at the 5:39 mark. But Quinnipiac followed with nine-straight points to reestablish a 30-17 lead before Horvatinovic buried a tough, contested jumper with 34 seconds left in the half to cut the Bobcats' lead to 30-19 at the break.
McQuain led Quinnipiac with nine points and eight rebounds, while Martin and Ostergaard had five points apiece at the half. English led the Hawks with four points and 11 rebounds at the half. Kurt and Paalvast also had four points apiece for Monmouth.
The Hawks drew back to within 10 on a Paalvast bucket early in the second half, but could get no closer. The Bobcats gradually worked their lead up to 35 points on Jaci Oskam's second-consecutive three-pointer with 1:15 left in regulation. The Hawks scored the final two points of the game from the free-throw line to account for the final 83-50 score.
For the game, Quinnipiac outshot the Hawks, 43.5 percent (27-62) to 28.6 percent (18-63) from the floor, including a 41.4 percent (12-29) to 8.3 percent (1-12) edge from long range. The Bobcats also edged Monmouth, 68.0 percent (17-25) to 65.0 percent (13-20) from the free-throw line and outrebounded the Hawks, 46-44.
The Hawks return to MAAC action on the road Wednesday when they face Hourglass Rival Rider. Opening tip from Alumni Gym is scheduled for 7 p.m.
