Box Score PRINCESS ANNE, Md. –
Jenny Horvatinovic (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) and
Mia Hopkins (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area) each scored career highs with 22 and 21 points, respectively, but the Monmouth University women's basketball team fell at Maryland Eastern Shore, 86-73, Tuesday afternoon at Hytche Arena. UMES (5-7) outscored MU, 19-1, to close the game, holding Monmouth (5-6) without a field goal for nearly the final six minutes of regulation.
Horvatinovic did her damage on 8-of-18 shooting, including 5-of-8 from long range. She scored 17 second-half points and hit four of her three-pointers in the latter stanza. Hopkins shot 9-for-13 from the floor, making all seven of her attempts from inside the three-point arc and going 2-for-6 from long range.
Helena Kurt (Spanga, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) added seven points and seven assists, while
Sara English (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West [UMass]) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Rachel Odumu (Manassas, Va./Miller School of Albemarle) also contributed four steals.
After exiting with foul trouble without scoring a point and grabbing just one rebound in the first half, Alexis Udoji finished with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds for UMES. Moengaroa Subritzky also added a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, doing most of her damage from the free-throw line (13-of-14). TeAmber Burke also scored 20 points, while Shawnee Sweeney chipped in with 12 points. Jessica Long, returning from a three-game absence, scored seven points, all from the free-throw line, dished out six assists and made five steals.
Monmouth was whistled for 33 fouls, leading to four disqualifications and 42 UMES attempts from the free-throw line. UMES shot 32-of-42 (.762) from the line, including 22-of-28 in the second half. UMES scored 17 of its final 25 points from the free-throw line, including 10 straight points from Subritzky from the charity stripe.
Monmouth used a 10-2 run to build a 30-19 lead on
Jasmine McCall's (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan [Seton Hall]) jumper at the 6:42 mark of the first half. McCall scored six points in the spurt, including the last four. But UMES outscored Monmouth, 19-3, to close out the first half and take a 42-37 lead at the break.
Burke led all scorers with 16 points at the break, while Subritzky added 11 points for UMES. Hopkins led the Hawks with 13 points at the half.

Jasmine Walker (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) lay-up and a Horvatinovic three to open the second half tied the game at 42-42. UMES surged back ahead by seven points on Udoji's fast-break lay-up at the 14:41 mark, before Hopkins stopped the bleeding with a three. The trifecta sparked a 13-1 Monmouth run, giving the Hawks a 55-52 lead on another Hopkins three-pointer at the 12:30 mark.
Monmouth gradually worked its lead up to seven points, 66-59, on Horvatinovic's fourth three of the half at the 10:38 mark. Following a Udoji lay-up, the next 10 UMES points came from Subritzky at the free-throw line. Udoji then scored the first UMES field goal since her own conversion more than five minutes earlier to give the home team a 73-72 lead. The lay-up was part of UMES' 19-1 spurt to end the game.
For the game, UMES outshot MU, 47.2 percent (25-53) to 39.4 percent (28-71) from the floor and 76.2 percent (32-42) to 62.5 percent (10-16) from the free-throw line. Monmouth took a 26.9 percent (7-26) to 25.0 percent (4-16) edge from long range, while UMES outrebounded MU, 43-37. Turnovers were common in the game, as UMES (29) coughed the ball up once more than MU (28).
Monmouth reopens MAAC play Friday, when they travel to Iona. Tipoff from the Hynes Athletic Center is slated for 7 p.m.
