LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Monmouth University women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season by defeating Rider, 5-2, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks swept the doubles point before picking up four singles wins to claim the road victory.

Sophomore Kendal Kauffman (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Farrah Smoke (Belmar, N.J./Manasquan [Brookdale C.C.]) downed Alison Noll and Michelle Caravaglio at No. 2 doubles, 8-6, while Chioma Gabriel (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) and Sarah Turner (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) edged their No. 2 counterparts Kerrin Toner and Danielle Scrudato in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-5).

In singles play, Gabriel defeated Tonor at No. 2, 7-5, 6-4 while Smoke improves to 4-1 in singles matches after coming back to beat Varavaglio, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-1. Senior Erica Tenpenny (Wall, N.J./Wall [Brookdale C.C.]) captured her first Monmouth win with her 6-3, 6-2 win over Montana Morris at No. 5, while Liz D'Arcy (Colonia, N.J./Wardlaw-Hartridge), slated at No. 6, won her match via a forfeit.

Monmouth returns to action Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. when it hosts Drexel.
