WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Senior Farrah Smoke (Belmar, N.J./Manasquan [Brookdale C.C.]) earned her third singles victory of the season, but the Monmouth University women's tennis team fell to visiting La Salle, 4-3, Monday afternoon at the MU Tennis Courts.
With the score tied at 3-3, senior Ashley Sandler (Jericho, N.Y./Syosset), playing in her first singles match this season due to injury, rallied in her No. 4 match to force a deceive third set, but untimely fell to Jade Smith, 6-2, 4-6, 10-3 allowing the Explorers to escape with the victory.
After La Salle swept the doubles point, Kendal Kauffman (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), playing No. 1 for the first time in her career, defeated Caitlin Coelho, 7-5, 6-0 to put the Hawks on the board. Smoke registered her third singles win of the fall, her second at No. 4, with her 6-4, 6-4 win over Alexandra Santerelli. Sarah Turner (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) capped off the Blue and White's scoring, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Madison Gillen at No. 6.
After taking on Rider on Tuesday, October 7th, the Hawks return home on Wednesday at 3 p.m. for a non-league tilt with Drexel.
