WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – In its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) dual match of the season, the Monmouth University women's tennis team defeated in-state rival Rider, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon at the MU Tennis Courts. The Hawks swept the doubles point before taking five of the six singles matches to earn its first victory of the year.
Senior Brooke Verdiglione (Englishtown, N.J./St. John Vianney) and junior Farrah Smoke (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan (Brookdale C.C.) edged Allison Noll and Kerrin Toner, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles, while the teams of Ashley Sandler (Jericho, N.Y./Syosset) and Chioma Gabriel, and Kendal Kauffman (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Robyn Belen (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) cruised to 8-1 and 8-0 wins over Michelle Caravaglio and Alexandria Extrjt, and Kim Leder and Leonora Paul at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
In singles action, Sandler downed Caravaglio, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2, while Smoke, playing No. 3 singles, rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Tonor. Kauffman handed Extrjt a 6-3, 6-2 defeat at No. 4 and Gabriel need a tiebreaker in the first set to down her No. 5 singles opponent 7-6 (7-3), before blanking Leder in the second set, 6-0. Belen rounded out the Hawks' line up at No. 6 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Paul.
For Kaufman, Gabriel, and Belen, it marks their first collegiate victories, while Smoke earns her first win in a MU uniform.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday afternoon as it travels to Jersey City, N.J. for a conference match at Saint Peter's.
