NEPTUNE, N.J. – The reigning Northeast Conference Golfer of the Week Ian Thimble (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston College H.S.) shot a match-low 77 as the Monmouth University men's golf team defeated Siena College 319 to 330, Thursday afternoon at Jumping Brook Country Club. The Hawks and Saints also played in a match-point format, which MU won 15-6. Under the format, one point is awarded to the low score for each nine-hole segment and for the total 18 holes. Seven matches were played, with a total of 21 points available.
“The golf course played extremely difficult and the high scores are due to the cold and windy conditions,” stated head coach Dennis Shea. “Based on the conditions, par could have been 75 or 76, but we are happy to get the win today. The team will have a short holiday break and then we will be back to work on Monday preparing for the Lafayette Invitational next weekend.”
Despite the cold and windy conditions, Thimble inked his third-straight round in the 70s, turning in the tournament best six-over-par 77. Junior Corey Carrick (Howell, N.J./Howell) and freshman Andrew Wester (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle), who was playing as an individual, shared second overall with rounds of 78, while Kyle Deisher (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery Area) finished the day with a 79. Luke DeSimone (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Brady Goodling (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) each finished the 6,600 yard course with an 85. Cody Gross, who also competed as an individual, registered an 82, earning a share of sixth overall.
Monmouth returns to action next weekend as it travels to Northampton Country Club in Easton, Pennsylvania for the Lafayette Invitational.
