MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Gabby Singer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) made 7-of-8
three-point attempts to score a season-high 21 points and the Monmouth
University women's basketball team buried 12 three-pointers en route to a 60-48
road victory over Robert Morris Monday night at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 13-14 (10-6 NEC), while the Colonials fall
to 7-20 (6-10 NEC).
Singer made 6-of-7
three-point attempts in the first half and connected on her only trifecta chance
in the second half to finish with 21 points. Carly Thibault (East Lyme,
Conn./East Lyme) added 13 points on 3-of-4 from long range and 4-for-4 from the
free-throw line, while Alysha Womack (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) chipped
in with 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Singer and Womack had
four assists each, while Womack made a team-high three steals. The Hawks' 12
three-pointers were the most since they made 12-of-22 against Central
Connecticut on Jan. 7, 2010.
Artemis Spanou led Robert
Morris with 25 points, 18 rebounds and three steals, but turned the ball over
seven times. Ashley Ravelli added 12 points, while Randi Jackson dished out
seven assists.
After a sluggish start that
saw the Colonials run out to nine-point leads, 14-5 and 19-10, the Hawks
outscored the Colonials, 20-4, over the final 8:40 of the first half to take a
30-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. Singer led the Hawks with 18
points on 6-of-7 shooting from long range in the half. Her previous full-game
career-high for three-point field goals made was four, established in her
freshman year against La Salle on Dec. 30, 2009. As a team, the Hawks shot
7-of-12 from long range, while the Colonials didn't connect on any of their six
three-point attempts in the first half. Spanou led Robert Morris with 11 points
and nine rebounds in the initial stanza.
The Hawks immediately
extended to a 10-point lead on Thibault's three-pointer seven seconds into the
second half. Five-straight points from Spanou cut the Hawks' lead to five
before an 8-0 run, capped by back-to-back Thibault three's pushed the MU lead
back to double-digits. Back-to-back Spanou buckets brought Robert Morris back
to within seven with 8:11 left to play. But a 12-0 run, fueled by Singer's
seventh three-pointer and a pair of Thibault free throws after Spanou was
assessed a technical for bumping an official, put the game out of reach for the
Colonials.
For the game, the Hawks
outshot the Colonials, 40.8 percent (20-49) to 32.1 percent (17-53) from the
floor, 57.1 percent (12-21) to 18.8 percent (3-16) from long range and 66.7
percent (8-12) to 61.1 percent (11-18) from the free-throw line. The Hawks
turned 23 Robert Morris turnovers into 29 points, while Monmouth's 19 turnovers
gave Robert Morris 17 points. Robert Morris took a 43-31 edge on the boards.
The Hawks return home
Saturday to play host to Wagner. Prior to the 3 p.m. tip, the Hawks will honor
their six-member senior class as part of Senior Day ceremonies. Monmouth will also
celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day on Saturday.
