LORETTO, Pa. -
Alysha Womack (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) scored a game-high 21 points,
but the Monmouth University women's basketball team was defeated by Saint
Francis, 69-56, Saturday afternoon at DeGol Arena. With the loss, the Hawks
fall to 12-14 (9-6 NEC), while the Red Flash improves to 14-12 (9-6 NEC).
Chevannah Paalvast (Auckland,
New Zealand/Massey) added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Gabby Singer added
a team-high three steals for the Hawks. The Hawks committed 30 turnovers in the
game, while the Red Flash coughed it up just 13 times.
Alli Williams led Saint
Francis with 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals, while Rebecca Keegan
added 13 points and six rebounds.
The Hawks trailed SFU, 30-18,
at the half. The Red Flash jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the early going and
continued to lead by nine before four points from Womack and two more from
Paalvast cut the deficit to three, 21-18, with 4:26 to play in the first half.
But SFU scored the half's last nine points to take a 12-point edge into the
locker room at halftime.
Womack and Betsy Gadziala
(Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) led the Hawks with six points each at the half,
while Williams led SFU with seven points and six rebounds at the break. The
Hawks were plagued by 13 first-half turnovers. The Saint Francis bench
outscored Monmouth's reserves, 20-6.
In the second half, the Hawks
cut the deficit to seven, 52-45, on Womack's three-pointer at the 6:03 mark.
But Monmouth would get no closer as the Red Flash put the game away at the
free-throw line.
For the game, the Hawks
outshot the Red Flash, 43.1 percent (22-51) to 32.3 percent (20-62) from the floor
and 36.4 percent (4-11) to 31.3 percent (5-16) from long range. SFU took a 68.6
percent (24-35) to 57.1 percent (8-14) edge from the free-throw line. The Hawks
outrebounded SFU, 46-36. The Red Flash bench outscored Monmouth's reserves,
43-14.
The Hawks continue Northeast
Conference play on the road Monday night, when they travel to Moon Township,
Pa., to take on Robert Morris. Opening tip from the Charles L. Sewall Center is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
