Box Score STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Chevannah Paalvast (Auckland, New Zealand/Massey) scored 13 of her 18 points in the second half, but the Monmouth University women's basketball team fell to Stony Brook, 69-52, Saturday afternoon in the Seawolves Holiday Classic. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 1-9, while the Seawolves improve to 7-3.
“I actually thought our effort today was a whole lot better than the last time we laced them up, so I was really happy with the effort piece,” said Monmouth Head Coach Jenny Palmateer. “But I think the bottom line was we turned the ball over way too many times. We kept ourselves in the game, even without Chevy who was in early foul trouble. We cut it to five in the first half, then just had some bad turnovers, a couple missed box outs here and there. It ballooned to about 10 and we just were never able to come back from that. They had 30 points off of our turnovers. We were giving such great effort on the defensive end, but we had to play defense 20 more times than they did, just because of our turnovers. And we couldn't overcome that today.”
Paalvast did her damage on 8-of-12 shooting, including 2-for-2 from long range. Jasmine Walker added 11 points, including 3-for-3 from beyond the three-point arc, and a team-high seven rebounds for MU.
Sabre Proctor led Stony Brook with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Chikilra Goodman added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. Jessica Ogunnorin also compiled a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
After Stony Brook opened the game with eight of the first 10 points, Monmouth responded with a 10-2 run to take a 12-10 lead. Walker got things started with a triple, while Paalvast scored five of the last seven points in the spurt. But the Seawolves countered with a 12-0 run to create a 10-point cushion, 22-12, and Monmouth would never regain the lead. The Hawks closed to 26-19, but Stony Brook finished the first half strong with an 11-2 run to take a 39-25 lead into the half.
Walker led the Hawks with six points and four rebounds at the half, while Paalvast (5) and Sara English (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West [UMass]) (4) made early contributions before taking a seat due to foul trouble. Proctor led Stony Brook with 11 points at the half, while Ogunnorin cleaned up with the glass for Stony Brook with eight rebounds.
Stony Brook extended to a 20-point lead early in the second half and the Hawks couldn't get any closer than to within 15 points the rest of the way.
For the game, Stony Brook outshot Monmouth, 46.7 percent (28-60) to 39.6 percent (19-48) from the floor and 68.8 percent (11-16) to 53.3 percent (8-15) from the free-throw line. Monmouth took a 40.0 percent (6-15) to 22.2 percent (2-9) edge from long range. Stony Brook edged the Hawks, 36-34, on the glass. Monmouth turned the ball over 28 times to the Seawolves' 18. Stony Brook turned the turnover discrepancy into a 30-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Hawks conclude play in the Seawolves Holiday Classic tomorrow, when they take on Eastern Michigan. Opening tip from Stony Brook University Arena is scheduled for noon.
