EMMITSBURG, Md. - Chevannah Paalvast (Auckland, New Zealand/Massey) scored a game-high
18 points, but the Monmouth University women's basketball team was defeated by
Mount St. Mary's, 70-51, Saturday afternoon at Knott Arena. With the loss in
their conference opener, the Hawks fall to 3-9 (0-1 NEC), while the
Mountaineers improve to 5-7 (1-0 NEC).
Carly Thibault (East Lyme,
Conn./East Lyme) added 15 points for the Hawks, including three three-pointers.
Adriana Allen (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering) chipped in eight points, while Abigail
Martin (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) had a game-high nine rebounds.
Sydney Henderson led the
Mount with 16 points, while Tara Lonergan added 14 points. Jacqueline Brewer
and Kayla Grossett also had nine points each.
The two teams exchanged runs
in the first half and the Mount came away with an eight-point lead after 20
minutes. The Mountaineers scored nine of the first 12 points to jump out to a
six-point lead. A Martin jumper and an Allen three-pointer cut the Mount lead
to one, 9-8. After the Mountaineers reestablished an eight-point cushion with a
7-0 run, Monmouth countered with six-straight points to cut the deficit to two,
16-14.
The game remained within four
points until Mount St. Mary's scored seven of the last 10 points to extend the
lead to 30-22 at the break. Paalvast led all scorers with 10 points at the
half, while Brewer led Mount St. Mary's with eight points.
The Mountaineers quickly
extended to a double-digit lead in the second half. Kasey Chambers' (Belmar,
N.J./St. Rose) three-pointer cut the deficit to nine with 12:47 remaining, but
the Hawks would draw no closer. The Mount St. Mary's lead swelled to as many as
26 points on a fast-break lay-up by Grossett with 2:51 remaining.
For the game, the
Mountaineers outshot the Hawks, 51.9 percent (27-52) to 27.9 percent (17-61)
from the floor, 37.5 percent (6-16) to 30.4 percent (7-23) from long range and 71.4
percent (10-14) to 62.5 percent (10-16) from the free-throw line. The Mount
edged the Hawks on the boards, 39-38, and took a 32-14 edge in points in the
paint.
The Hawks return to Northeast
Conference play Monday at Wagner. Opening tip from Spiro Sports Center is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
