NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Jesse Menzies scored on a penalty kick in the 38th minute
as Central Connecticut State defeated the Monmouth University men's soccer team,
1-0, Sunday afternoon in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams on the
CCSU Soccer Field. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 5-3-1 (0-1-0 NEC), while the
Blue Devils improve to 3-5-1 (1-0-0 NEC).
The Blue Devils took a 10-4
edge in shots on the afternoon, while the Hawks took a 5-0 advantage in corner
kicks. Monmouth senior goalkeeper Alex Blackburn (Natick, Mass./Natick) made
four saves in defeat, while Anthony Occhialini made two saves in the victory.
The Hawks return home to face
intrastate NEC rival Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7
p.m. under the lights on The Great Lawn.
