WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Alysha Womack (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) scored
a team-high 19 points, but the Monmouth University women's basketball team fell
to Quinnipiac, 75-63, Saturday afternoon at the Multipurpose Activity Center.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 12-10 (7-4 NEC), while the Bobcats improve to
17-5 (9-2 NEC).
Abby Martin (Maplewood,
N.J./Columbia) added a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds for the
Hawks, while Gena Broadus (Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll [George Mason]) grabbed
10 rebounds. Chevannah Paalvast (Auckland, New Zealand/Massey) and Betsy
Gadziala (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) had eight points each.
Felicia Barron led Quinnipiac
with 23 points, five assists and three steals, while Brittany McQuain (13),
Samantha Guastella (11) and Camryn Warner (10) also scored in double figures.
After Quinnipiac jumped out
to a 7-2 edge to open the game, Monmouth whittled the lead down to two points,
14-12, at the 11:56 mark on a Paalvast jumper. But the Bobcats then reeled off
18 of the next 22 points to take an 18-point lead, 34-16, at the 5:35 mark. But
Monmouth turned the tables on the Bobcats, scoring 14 of the next 18 points to
close the half and cut the deficit to eight, 38-30.
Womack led the Hawks with
eight first-half points, while Barron led the Bobcats with 15 points.
The Bobcats scored the first
eight points of the second half and extended the lead to as many as 20 points
by the 7:51 mark. The Hawks could draw no closer than the final score of 75-63.
For the game, the Bobcats
outshot the Hawks, 48.4 percent (30-62) to 34.3 percent (24-70) from the floor
and 33.3 percent (3-9) to 23.1 percent (3-13) from long range. The Hawks took a
75.0 percent (12-16) to 60.0 percent (12-20) edge from the free-throw line, and
outrebounded the Bobcats, 46-38. Quinnipiac turned 19 Monmouth turnovers into
25 points, while the Hawks could muster just nine points off of Quinnipiac's 18
turnovers.
The Hawks return
to action Monday, when they play host to Sacred Heart. Opening tip from the MAC
is scheduled for 7 p.m.
