HACKENSACK, N.J. - Carly Thibault (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) scored all of her
team-high 11 points in the second half as the Monmouth University women's
basketball team held off Garden State rival Fairleigh Dickinson, 64-60,
Wednesday night at Stratis Arena. With the win, the Hawks (14-11, 9-5 NEC)
retain the Codey Cup, representative of the men's and women's basketball season
series winner between the two schools. FDU falls to 12-14 (7-7 NEC) with the loss.
All 10 Monmouth players who
saw the court scored in a balanced Hawks attack. In addition to Thibault's 11
points, Alysha Womack (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) also finished in
double figures with 10 points. Abby Martin (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) added
eight points, seven rebounds and two steals, while Alexis Canady (Forestville,
Md./Bishop McNamara) had seven points and five rebounds. Chevannah Paalvast
(Auckland, New Zealand/Massey), Shira Shecht (Pardessiya, Israel/Hadassim) and
Chanel Gomez (Perth Amboy, N.J./Perth Amboy [Brookdale C.C.]) also chipped in
six points apiece. Gena Broadus (Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll [George Mason])
added four points, seven rebounds and a game-high five assists.
Mariyah Laury led
all scorers with 20 points, less than half her output of 42 points in Saturday's
FDU victory at the MAC. The MU defense held Laury to 7-of-22 shooting from the floor.
Erika Livermore added 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Danielle Pankey
contributed 10 points.
Nine different
Hawks scored in the first half, led by Gomez's six points off the bench. After
FDU took just its second lead of the game, 21-19, on a Laury jumper at the 4:24
mark, the Hawks ended the half on an 8-0 run in which Gomez scored all six of her
first-half points. Laury led FDU with eight points, but hit just 3-of-10
field-goal attempts, symbolic of the Knights' 29.0 percent (9-31) shooting in
the first half. Gomez also led all rebounders with five in just six first-half
minutes.
The Knights
closed to within two points on two occasions in the second half, but the Hawks
retained the lead for the duration of the stanza to close out the victory. Thibault
was 3-for-3 from long range in the second half and 2-for-2 from the free-throw
line to account for her 11 points, keeping the Knights at bay. Womack also
added eight second-half points, while Martin had six.
For the game, the
Knights took a 36.5 percent (23-63) to 35.7 percent (25-70) edge from the field
and a 44-41 advantage on the boards. Monmouth outshot FDU, 28.6 percent (4-14)
to 12.5 percent (2-16) from long range and 83.3 percent (10-12) to 60.0 percent
(12-20) from the free-throw line.
The Hawks return
to action Saturday, when they travel to Staten Island to take on Wagner.
