ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Alysha Womack (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) scored a team-high 17 points, but the Monmouth University women's basketball team was defeated by East Carolina, 64-49, Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Navy Classic at Alumni Hall. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-5, while the Pirates improve to 6-2. In averaging 16.0 points per game over the two-game tournament, Chevannah Paalvast (Auckland, New Zealand/Massey) was named to the Navy Classic All-Tournament Team.

Paalvast contributed 10 points for the Hawks, while Abigail Martin (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) chipped in eight points and Betsy Gadziala (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) added seven points.

Britny Edwards led all scorers and rebounders with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while twin sister Whitny Edwards added six points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Tatiana Chapple added 12 points for ECU, while Celeste Stewart added eight points and five assists.

East Carolina ran out to a 21-point lead in the first half on the strength of 10 points from Britny Edwards and eight more from Chapple. But Monmouth stormed back with a 12-2 run to close out the half and cut the deficit to 11 points, 36-25, at halftime. Paalvast led the Hawks with nine points at the break.

The Hawks cut the deficit to as few as six points, 47-41, with eight minutes remaining in the second half on four-straight made free throws, two each from Womack and Kasey Chambers (Belmar, N.J./St. Rose). But the Pirates scored 17 of the final 25 points of the game, upping the advantage to as many as 18 points in the final minute.

For the game, the Pirates outshot the Hawks, 39.4 percent (26-66) to 31.8 percent (14-44) from the floor, 21.7 percent (5-23) to 12.5 percent (1-8) from long range, and 70.0 percent (7-10)to 58.8 percent (20-34) from the free-throw line. ECU also outrebounded the Hawks, 48-33, and took a slight edge in the turnover game, forcing 22 Hawks' turnovers, while coughing it up 20 times. ECU took a decided advantage in points in the paint (30-14), second-chance points (15-3) and bench scoring (19-6).

The Hawks return home Tuesday, when they play host to perennial Big East power Georgetown. Opening tip from the Multipurpose Activity Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
