The Monmouth University women's
basketball team opens the 2012-13 season Sunday, when it travels to Baltimore,
Md., to take on UMBC. The Hawks are coming off a 19-13 campaign, a Northeast
Conference runner-up finish and a strong end of the season upon the return of
All-NEC guard Alysha Womack from injury. The Retrievers also finished as
runners up in the America East, knocking off top-seeded Boston University in
the America East Semifinals. UMBC won last year's pairing, 68-64, Nov. 13 at
the MAC.
SCOUTING THE UMBC
RETRIEVERS
The
Retrievers fell to Morgan State, 72-61, in their season opener Friday. Lauren
Chase had 18 points, while Bria White added 15 points. UMBC lost its top two
scorers and second and third-leading rebounders from a year ago in Erin Brown
(14.2 ppg., 6.5 rpg.) and Michelle Kurowski (13.3 ppg., 5.2 rpg.), but returns
a group of talented guards in Kristin Coles (9.3 ppg., 7.6 rpg., 1.8 spg.),
Chase (8.4 ppg., 4.6 apg., 1.5 spg.), Brittany Crowell (7.0 ppg.) and Raven
Harris (4.0 ppg., 1.3 spg.). UMBC finished first in the America East in scoring
offense (60.3 ppg.) and field goal percentage (.392).
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. UMBC
Though
the Hawks own an 8-4 lead in the all-time series with UMBC, the Retrievers have
taken the last two meetings. The first meeting since UMBC left the NEC for the
America East came last Nov. 13 at the MAC, a 68-64 win for the Retrievers.
