KINGSTON, R.I. - The Monmouth University women's tennis team dropped a pair of matches last weekend, falling in a Northeast Conference battle at Bryant before being defeated in a non-conference tilt at Rhode Island.
Against the Bulldogs, the Hawks' (1-5, 0-3 NEC) junior Brooke Verdiglione (Englishtown, N.J./St. John Vianney) took Marcela Brandao to a third set at No. 2 singles, but ultimately fell, 6-2, 6-7, 7-4, while sophomore Ashley Sandler (Jericho, N.Y./Syosset) nearly forced a third set against counterpart Stephanie Smyers at third singles, but was edged, 6-3, 7-5.
The following day against the Rams, Verdiglione was on the verge of earning a point for the Blue and White, yet dropped her singles affair with Kathleen Uy, 6-3, 6-4.
The Hawks return home this Thursday, October 11th as they welcome in intrastate foe, Saint Peter's. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
