GONCALVES SCORES TWICE AS HAWKS TOP WAGNER 3-2

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Freshman forward Monique Goncalves (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) scored a pair of goals for the Hawks and junior Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) added a pair of assists, as the Monmouth University women's soccer team posted a 3-2 road victory at Wagner on Sunday afternoon in Northeast Conference action.

The Hawks, who have now posted a 8-1-2 record in their last 11 matches, improve to 9-5-2 overall and 6-1-1 in conference action.

"Today was not our best performance of the season," stated head coach Krissy Turner, who has recorded 89 career NEC victories in her 15th season with the Hawks. "However, we got the result we needed."

Monmouth fell behind in the seventh minute when Johanna Konrad tallied a goal for the Seahawks off a corner kick service from Alissa Bianculli, the fourth time this season the Hawks surrendered a goal in the opening 10 minutes of a match.

The Blue and White answered in the 39th minute when Goncalves notched the first of her two goals on the afternoon, following her own shot, and knotting the score at 1-1.

"Monique finished two great chances with composure and finesse today," added Turner, as Goncalves increased her first-year goal total to four.

Monmouth took the lead in the 74th minute when sophomore Alexa Freguletti (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) nodded in Costello's corner kick delivery, for her third score of the year, and fourth of her career.

Goncalves, who scored three goals on the week, pushed the Hawks ahead 3-1 in the final minute of play, firing a strike from 30 yards away off a through ball from Costello, before the Seahawks made things interesting with a goal of their own with 13 seconds left, as Alyssa Grecco beat sophomore Jocelyn McCoy (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) from a similar distance.

With a pair of assists on the afternoon, Costello increased her team-leading point total to 19, while the junior upped her career point total to 56 points in 53 games.

Monmouth and Wagner each fired 15 shots on the day, as McCoy made six saves in goal for the Hawks. Lisa Capelli made five stops for Wagner. The Hawks, who got for shots on goal from Goncalves, and three shots from junior Monique Plescia (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Regional-Old Tappan), had just one corner kick, compared to Wagner's five attempts.

Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, when the Hawks host Saint Francis (Pa.) on The Great Lawn at 12:00 p.m., on Senior Day, in a match that may have a lot of weight in determining this year's NEC regular season champion.
