WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Abby Martin (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia)
compiled her second double-double of the season with 22 points and a
season-high 14 rebounds as the Monmouth University women's basketball team won
its fourth straight game with a 59-52 decision over Mount St. Mary's Monday
night at the Multipurpose Activity Center. With the win, the Hawks improve to
7-8 (2-2 NEC), while the Mountaineers fall to 6-9 (2-2 NEC).
Alysha Womack
(Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) added a season-high 17 points for the Hawks,
while Betsy Gadziala (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) added nine points and a
career-high 10 rebounds.
Sydney Henderson
scored a team-high 18 points for Mount St. Mary's, while Sandra Andresson added
11 points. Rachel Mathews had a team-high nine rebounds.
After the Mount
scored six of the first eight points and later led, 9-6, the Hawks went on an
8-0 run to open a seven-point lead, 16-9. The lead reached eight points, 19-11,
on Womack's free throw at the 4:19 mark. Mount St. Mary's clawed back with
eight of the next 10 points to close to within two points at 21-19. But a
Carly Thibault (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) three-pointer broke the Mount St. Mary's momentum and the Hawks closed
the half with a Martin lay-up, entering the break on top, 26-21. Martin led the
Hawks with 10 first-half points, while Andresson countered with seven for the
Mount.
After the Mount
closed to within two points, 33-31, on Henderson's three-pointer at the 16:11
mark, Monmouth went on a 10-2 run to create a 10-point cushion, 43-33, with 12:32
to go in regulation. Womack scored 10 points in first nine minutes of the
second half to fuel the Hawks' run. The Mountaineers would draw no closer than
to within five points the rest of the way and the Hawks' lead swelled to as many
as 12 points on Martin's conventional three-point play with 3:27 left.
For the game,
Monmouth outshot Mount St. Mary's, 39.3 percent (22-56) to 31.7 percent (19-60)
from the floor and 73.7 percent (14-19) to 42.9 percent (3-7) from the free-throw
line. The Hawks also took a 43-39 advantage on the boards, while the Mount took
a 47.8 percent (11-23) to 11.1 percent (1-9) edge from long range.
The Hawks resume
NEC action Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Brooklyn to take on LIU
Brooklyn. Opening tip from the Wellness Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
