WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COASTS PAST WAGNER, 65-42

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Alexis Canady (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) scored a team-high 15 points to lead a balanced Monmouth women's basketball attack in a 65-42 victory over Wagner, Saturday afternoon at the Multipurpose Activity Center. With the win, the Hawks improve to 6-8 (1-2 NEC), while the Seahawks fall to 2-12 (1-2 NEC).

Chevannah Paalvast (Auckland, New Zealand/Massey) scored in double figures for the third straight game with 10 points, while Betsy Gadziala (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro), Alysha Womack (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and Shira Shecht (Pardessiya, Israel/Hadassim) contributed nine points apiece. Gena Broadus (Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll [George Mason]) also added eight points. Broadus, Gadziala and Womack each had six rebounds.

Kelly Clark led Wagner with a game-high 22 points and 16 rebounds. Marie-Laurence Archambault added seven points and six rebounds for the Seahawks.

Monmouth used first-half runs of 8-0, 7-0, and 9-1 to take a 14-point lead into halftime. An early 8-0 spurt put the Hawks ahead, 10-3. Broadus and Womack had three points each in the early scoring. The Seahawks gradually whittled the Hawks' advantage down to four points, 15-11, on Clark's jumper in the paint at the 8:09 mark. But the Hawks immediately responded with a 7-0 run to open a double-digit lead, 22-11, with 6:25 left in the half. After the Seahawks closed to within six points at 26-20, the Hawks outscored Wagner, 9-1, to close the half and took a 35-21 advantage into the locker room.

Gadziala, Paalvast and Womack scored seven points apiece to lead Monmouth, while Wagner's Kelly Clark almost single-handedly kept the Seahawks in the game with 12 points and six rebounds. The Hawks outshot Wagner, 38.7 percent (12-31) to 29.0 percent (9-31) from the floor. The Hawks forced 13 turnovers in the first half, while committing just five of their own.

On the strength of nine quick points from Canady before the under-16 media timeout, the Hawks immediately upped the lead to 19 points in the second half and never led by fewer than 17 points the rest of the way. The lead gradually swelled to 26 points on Adriana Allen's (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering) three-pointer with 1:52 remaining in regulation.

For the game, the Hawks outshot the Seahawks, 38.7 percent (24-62) to 31.0 percent (18-58) from the floor, and 40.0 percent (4-10) to 11.8 percent (2-17) from long range. Wagner took a 57.1 percent (4-7) to 50.0 percent (13-26) edge from the free-throw line and outrebounded the Hawks, 45-42.

The Hawks resume NEC action Monday night, when they play host to Mount St. Mary's. Opening tip from the MAC is scheduled for 7 p.m.
