FLUSHING MEADOWS,
N.Y.- Monmouth University women's tennis team (0-1) dropped a 5-2 decision
to Manhattan College in the 2011-12 season opener at USTA Billie Jean King
National Tennis Center. The Hawks took two of the six singles points.
The Hawks found themselves in a 1-0 hole after Manhattan swept the doubles
matches. Sophomore Brooke Verdiglione
(Englishtown, N.J./St. John Vianney) won the No. 2 singles match, 7-5, 6-1 over
the Jaspers' Hilary Valenzuela while Dana Ferrari (Saddlebrook, N.J./Immaculate
Heart Academy earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the fourth singles match.
Freshman Ashley Sandler (Jericho, N.Y./Syosset) almost pulled off her first
collegiate win after winning three straight games to tie the second set against
Caitlin Bricketto. In the end Sandler
fell just short, falling in the hard fought match to Bricketto by a score of 7-5,
6-4.
The Hawks are back in action on Thursday
when they travel to face Saint Peter's College at 3:30 p.m.
