WOMEN'S TENNIS DOWNS WAGNER, 5-1

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.- The Monmouth University women's tennis team defeated conference rival Wagner College 5-1, on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks won five of the six singles tilts in the competition, while the doubles matches were canceled because of rain.

Sophomore Nicole Lippens (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) started the scoring for the Hawks in the first singles flight with her 6-4, 6-1, straight set victory against Nikki Arnold. Dana Ferrari (Saddlebrook, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) took down Wagner's Julie Jebran 6-1, 6-0, at second singles. Shelby Goldman (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) blanked Joanna Ciavarella 6-0, 6-0, and earned the Hawks third point in the match.

In the fourth flight, Jessica Slinger (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) coasted to a 6-2, 6-0, win over the Seahawks Sabrina Dileo. At fifth singles, Alyssa Teehan (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) matched up with Diana Ciavarella and battled to a 7-6 (4-0), 3-6, 7-6 (4-0), three set victory for Monmouth.

With the win, MU moves to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in Northeast Conference play on the season. Wagner drops to 2-9 and 2-5 in the league after the loss.

The Hawks return to the court Friday, April 8, when they travel to Teaneck, N.J. for another conference match against Fairleigh Dickinson. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
