RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Junior forward Betsy Gadziala (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) scored a
career-high 16 points to help the Monmouth University women's basketball team
force overtime, but Manhattan outscored the Hawks, 15-3, in the extra session to
defeat the Hawks, 71-59, Saturday night at Draddy Gymnasium. With the loss, the
Hawks fall to 3-8, while the Jaspers improve to 3-6.
Abby Martin (Maplewood,
N.J./Columbia) added 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Hawks.
Alexis Canady (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) dished out a game-high seven
assists.
Monica Roeder scored a
game-high 17 points for Manhattan, while Schyanne Halfkenny added 14 points and
a game-high eight rebounds. Halfkenny scored five of her points in overtime.
Nadia Peters had 11 points and five steals for Manhattan, while Ondya Morgan
chipped in 10 points and six assists.
Trailing from the outset with
the Jaspers leading by as many as nine in the first half, the Hawks took their
first lead of the game, 41-40, on Chevannah Paalvast's (Auckland, New
Zealand/Massey) three-pointer at the 12:50 mark. The lead exchanged hands five
times, before Manhattan went on a 10-0 run to open up a six-point lead, 55-49. Monmouth
clawed back with the next six points on a Martin bucket, two Canady free throws
and a three-pointer from Shira Shecht (Pardessiya, Israel/Hadassim) at the 1:20
mark.
On the ensuing Jaspers
possession, Morgan drove into a waiting Martin. The latter appeared to be straight
up with a handful of ball, but was whistled for the foul. Morgan made 1-of-2
free throws to tie the game at 56-56 with 1:05 remaining in regulation. Neither
team could convert in the final minute, and the game headed to overtime.
In the extra session,
offensive rebounds by Manhattan and their own turnovers plagued the Hawks.
Immediately off the tip, the Hawks grabbed possession, but turned the ball over
to the Jaspers. Manhattan missed on a pair of opportunities, but the Hawks
turned the ball over shortly after gaining possession. At the 3:24 mark,
Halfkenny knocked down a three-pointer and the Hawks would trail the rest of
the way. After five straight Manhattan points, a Martin bucket and free throw
cut the deficit to two points. But Manhattan scored the game's last 10 points
the seal the deal.
The Jaspers led from the
outset on Morgan's bucket on Manhattan's opening possession and never trailed
in the first half. The first-half lead extended to as many as nine points on
Roeder's two free throws at the 9:56 mark. But Gadziala was effective as
finding the seams in the Jaspers' zone defense to score 12 points in the stanza,
cutting the deficit to four points, 29-25, at the break.
For the game, the
Hawks edged the Jaspers from the field, 43.1 percent (22-51) to 42.9 percent
(24-56), while Manhattan took a 31.8 percent (7-22) to 26.3 percent (5-19) edge
from long range and an 84.2 percent (16-19) to 83.3 percent (10-12) advantage
from the free-throw line. The Hawks outrebounded Manhattan, 32-30. Turnovers
dominated the game, with the Hawks committing 27 to the Jaspers' 21.
