WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Abby Martin (Maplewood/Columbia) and Alexis Canady
(Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) each compiled double-doubles as the Monmouth
University women's basketball team defeated Saint Peter's, 73-64, Saturday
afternoon at the Multipurpose Activity Center. With the win, the Hawks improve
to 3-6, while the Peahens fall to 0-7. Martin scored a game-high 21 points and
grabbed 12 rebounds, while Canady scored 17 points, grabbed a career-high 12
rebounds and dished out six assists.
Shira Shecht (Pardessiya,
Israel/Hadassim) added a career-high nine points, while Gena Broadus
(Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll) had eight points and nine rebounds. The
Hawks grabbed a season-high 52 rebounds, taking a plus-14 advantage on the boards.
Jynae Judson led Saint Peter's
with 12 points, while Aziza May added 11 points and a team-high six assists.
Kaydine Bent also added nine points for the Peahens.
After Saint Peter's tied the game,
52-52, at the 8:28 mark of the second half, Monmouth went on a 15-3 run and
never looked back. Martin scored the go-ahead bucket in the paint while being
fouled at the 8:04 mark, and totaled seven points in the decisive run.
For the game, the Hawks
outshot the Peahens, 39.3 percent (24-61) to 37.1 percent (26-70) from the floor
and 71.4 percent (20-28) to 57.1 percent (8-14) from the free-throw line. Saint
Peter's edged the Hawks, 30.8 percent (4-13) to 26.3 percent (5-19) from long
range.
After the Peahens scored
first to open the game, Monmouth answered with a 7-0 run capped by Canady's
three-pointer at the 18:12 mark. The Monmouth lead swelled to as many as nine
points, 16-7, at the 11:51 mark on Martin's bucket in the paint. But the Peahens
responded with 15 of the next 21 points, including an 8-0 run, to tie the game
at 22-22 on Young's three-pointer at the 7:33 mark.
With the score still knotted
at 26-26, Shecht buried a three-pointer and Broadus followed with a bucket in
the paint to open a five-point Monmouth lead. But Saint Peter's scored the half's
final four points on second-chance opportunities from Bent and Aminah Davis to
cut the Hawks' lead to one, 31-30, at the break.
Canady led the Hawks with
eight points, nine rebounds and five assists at the half, while Khadijah Young
and Bent had six points apiece off the bench for Saint Peter's.
With the Hawks' lead still
one point, 39-38, early in the second half, Monmouth went on a 9-0 run to open
a double-digit advantage, 48-38. Canady accounted for four points in the
stretch, including a crucial three-pointer to put Monmouth ahead, 46-38. But
the Peahens responded with an 11-2 run to close to within one point at 50-49. Bent's
bucket in the paint tied the game at 52-52, before a Martin putback gave
Monmouth a two-point edge, 54-52, at the 8:03 mark. The bucket sparked a 15-3
spurt for Monmouth, giving the Hawks their largest lead of the game, 12 points,
at 67-55.
Monmouth returns to
action Wednesday, when it plays host to Winthrop. Opening tip from the MAC is
scheduled for 7 p.m.
