The Monmouth University women's basketball team plays its first game under new Head Coach Jenny Palmateer on Sunday, when it welcomes former Northeast Conference opponent UMBC to the Multipurpose Activity Center. The Hawks are coming off a 23-10 season in which Monmouth advanced to the WNIT, the second national postseason tournament appearance in program history.
LAST TIME OUT
Monmouth fell to Syracuse, 77-53, in the first round of WNIT on March 17, 2011. The Hawks led, 33-31, at the half, but the hot-shooting Orange (54.7 percent) were too much for Monmouth to keep up with. Alexis Canady had a strong all-around game, finishing with a team-high 13 points to go along with five assists, three steals and two rebounds.
SCOUTING THE UMBC RETRIEVERS
Fresh off a WNIT bid in 2011, the Retrievers won their season opener Friday night at home against Morgan State, 72-50. Brittany Crowell had a team-high 15 points off the bench, while Erin Brown contributed a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Michelle Kurowski and Lauren Chase also finished in double-figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Retrievers dominated the boards, taking a 45-30 advantage, which led to a 16-3 edge in second-chance points.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST UMBC
The Hawks own an 8-3 advantage in the all-time series against UMBC, including a stretch of seven straight victories before the Retrievers took a 48-40 victory in the 2003 NEC Tournament Semifinals on March 9, 2003, the last time the two teams met.
