WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.-
Monmouth University's women's tennis team (1-8, 1-2 NEC ) earned its
first win of the season with a 6-1 home victory over Wagner (1-4) today at the
MU Tennis Courts.
The Hawks started out the day by sweeping the doubles matches. Junior Nicole Lippens (West Long Branch,
N.J./Shore Regional) and sophomore Brooke Verdiglione (Englishtown, N.J./St.
John Vianney) earned a 8-4 victory over the Seahawk combo of Arnold and
Jurgilewicz. Junior Dana Ferrari (Saddle
Brook, N.J./Immaculate Heart Acad.) and freshman Ashley Sandler (Jericho,
N.Y./Syosset) picked up a 8-2 victory at the No. 2 doubles slot while the
freshman duo of Liz D'Arcy (Colonia, N.J./Wardlaw-Hartridge) and Sarah Turner (Alexandria,
Va./Thomas Edison) blanked Wagner's No. 3 team of Brennan and Scavelli 8-0.
Lippens got her first win of the season at the top singles spot, downing Rachel
Jurgilewicz 6-3, 6-1. Verdiglione
suffered a tough 7-5, 6-2 match at the No. 2 singles spot, the only victory of
the day for Wagner. Sandler continued
her solid first fall as a collegiate player with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Lauren
Hauer with Ferrari sweeping Julie Teichman at the fourth slot.
D'Arcy and Turner each got their first collegiate dual match wins against the
Seahawks. D'Arcy took care of Catharine
Scavelli 6-1, 6-0 while Turner dispatched Sabrina DiLeo by a 6-0, 6-0 score.
The Hawks wrap up the fall season tomorrow, when they travel
to face Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Conn.
