WEST
LONG BRANCH, N.J.- Monmouth University's football team has named Kenny Amsel (Demarest, N.J. (Northern Valley
Regional), Jeff Brady (East Aurora, N.Y. (St. Francis), Jose Gumbs (Queens,
N.Y./Hebron Academy), Ryan Folsom (Somerdale, N.J./Triton Regional) and Shawn Wright (Ft. Washington, Md. (DeMatha Catholic) as 2010 captains, head coach
Kevin Callahan announced on Thursday.
"This group has a great work ethic and a strong commitment to winning," said
Callahan. "Their success on the field, their leadership in the locker room, and
the manner in which they represent the football program and the University make
them deserving leaders of our 2010 team. They are individuals who have
earned the respect of their teammates."
Two of those players, Amsel and Wright, served as captains during the 2009
campaign. Amsel is a two-year starter at
defensive back that has compiled 115 tackles and nine interceptions. Last season the redshirt junior led the Hawks
in picks with five and enters his final season just four away from tying David Jiles for Monmouth's all-time record.
Wright earned his third straight All-Northeast Conference honor after last
season at right guard. The DeMatha
Catholic product has been a mainstay for the MU o-line since starting his
sophomore season; missing just two games due to injury.
Brady and Folsom are also fifth-year senior starters. Brady has appeared in 28 at linebacker for
the Hawks. Despite battling injuries, he has 113 tackles, including 10 for a loss and three
sacks. Folsom moved from quarterback to wideout before the start of last season,
finishing third among the MU wideouts in receptions and second in yardage. He averaged 11.9 yards per catch and hauled
in a pair of touchdowns as a junior.
Gumbs, the reigning NEC Defensive Player of the Year, is the only non-senior of
the bunch. He's a versatile player who
can play any defensive back position and even linebacker, which he had to do
for a number of games last season. Despite
missing three games due to injury, Gumbs has led the Hawks in tackles in each
of his last two seasons.
Monmouth begins its 18th season of football on Sept. 4, when they
travel to Hamilton, N.Y. for a matchup with Colgate University.
